Blue September is held every year to remind men to look after their health. The month raises awareness about illnesses that affect men, in particular prostate cancer and testicular cancer, but it also encourages men to take care of their overall wellbeing.
What is prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer (mate pukupuku repe tātea) is the most common type of cancer for New Zealand men. It's most common in men over 50 years of age but can occasionally occur in those who are younger. If caught early, prostate cancer can be managed well and can usually be cured. Find out more about prostate cancer here.
When should I get checked?
If you notice anything unusual with the flow or irritation of your bladder/urine, tell your healthcare provider
If you are 50+ years old, you should ask your healthcare provider if you need to do a check
If you are 45+ years old, and have a family history of prostate cancer, ask your healthcare provider if you need to do a check.
How to get involved in Blue September
With prostate cancer being the most common type of cancer for Kiwi males, it is important to raise awareness and keep the conversation going. Check out some of the awesome initiatives that the team running Blue September are doing here.
Some ways you can get involved this September are to:
Wear blue during September to show support
Share helpful info with friends, family, or online
Encourage open conversations about health and wellbeing
Support local events or fundraisers that promote men’s health.
Blue September isn’t about fear, it’s about empowerment. It’s a reminder that taking care of your health is a sign of strength, not weakness. Whether it’s booking a check-up, or checking in with a mate, every small action counts.
Let’s make health a regular part of the conversation - not just in September, but all year round.
